We're Hiring an Arts Integration ManagerArts Integration Manager The definition of Arts Integration for this program is as follows: Arts Integration is an approach to teaching in which students construct and demonstrate understanding through an art form. Students engage in a creative process, which connects an art form and another subject area and meets evolving objectives in both.
Some of the key goals of the program include: establishing a network of schools committed to arts integration as an approach to teaching; developing teachers’ and artists’ abilities to plan, lead and assess quality arts integration lessons; positively influence the way teachers teach and the way students learn; and facilitating teachers and students to meet provincially determined Prescribed Learning Outcomes in the arts and other subject areas.

Imagination Play with Kathryn RickettsWe all had an entertaining morning and afternoon as artist and story teller, Kathryn Ricketts tells us a story through her imagination, physical gestures and interactive performances. Kathryn's method of storytelling is to get children and families excited about the content, in this case Dr Suess, and relate in a physical way so that everyone has a deeper experience beyond listening to a story. |

Young Artists visit for Grow Exhibition Opening45 student artists from Mount Pleasant Elementary School visited ArtStarts for the opening celebration of Grow, an exhibition that features artwork that they, along with students from across BC, created in collaboration with professional artists. The work was inspired by their interactions with nature and discussions around sustainability. |

2011 Showcase in ReviewA month has passed since ArtStarts hosted the 2011 Showcase and we’ve had some time now to reflect on – and recover from – this exciting and rewarding annual event. Showcase connects school and community arts programmers with a diverse range of professional arts groups available for touring schools. Many months of planning and preparation go into creating a three-day event that is well-programmed, well-organized and well-attended. Looking back we can safely say that those goals were achieved. |

Over $11,000 awarded through the Cherniavsky "Mr. Music" FundArtStarts in Schools has just mailed the first round of cheques to schools on behalf of the Cherniavsky’s ‘‘Mr. Music’’ Fund. This annual program offers grants to schools to assist in purchasing tickets for students to attend a wide range of live performances in classical and traditional music, opera, or dance. This year, a total of $11,231 will reach students in 56 rural and urban communities, giving almost 4,500 lucky students the opportunity to discover and enjoy the classics. |

That means that over 3440 students in 19 BC communities will have their learning enriched this school year, as professional artists engage with them through hands-on art projects in the classroom. |

The event helps arts programmers select from a diverse range of professional arts groups when booking performances for young audiences in their communities. However, after careful consideration, ArtStarts has decided to postpone our April 2010 Showcase until February 2011. |

He got kids stomping around like prehistoric dinosaurs, paddling an imaginary canoe through the Land of the Silver Birch, and waltzing like Log-Drivers on the Ottawa river. |
Flutter, Hum, Buzz...Yesterday the ArtStarts gallery was visited for a second time by a group of 3/4 students from Graham Bruce Elementary, here to view a display about their completed project Flutter, Hum, Buzz: An Artful Garden Party. The project was the result of an artist residency by Lori Weidenhammer, who helped the students to learn that art is more than painting and sculpture, and that the raw materials for artistic expression can be found all around them. |

SWARM takes ArtStarts by storm!What an exhilarating performance by Vancouver's very own hyper- kinetic percussion troupe SWARM! The group offered a unique hands on experience filled with fun, music and movement. Kids learned action drumming using funky recycled instruments such as rubber tubing, garbage can drums and even rubber duckies and chickens. Parents and kids leaving the event told us it was a blast, so awesome, and that they i loved it all! |
My volunteering experience at ArtStartsFor a while now, I've been saying to whomever wants to hear it, that the highlight of my week is coming to ArtStarts to volunteer a few hours. It's not because of the work I do here, since being a volunteer implies that I don't have a position with responsibilities that demands much creativity, I do basic office work and help a bit with gallery strikes and set-ups. Nonetheless, everything I do here I like very much. |

It'll be another exciting year for the Vancouver Opera, as they are en route across the province with their show "Jack Pine," an operatic performance that explores issues of self-esteem and the environment. |

ArtStarts Executive Director, Wendy Newman was one of the nominees in the Arts, Culture & Design category for her lifelong dedication to the arts including the establishment of the ArtStarts gallery for young people’s art. |
Group of 60 visits ArtStarts!Peals of laughter rang through the gallery as 60 grade 3/4s from Graham Bruce Elementary took part in a gallery tour followed by a session of timed, blind contour drawing, which aims to free up the drawing juices. |
Joe Ink moves it!Both children and parents shook it up and stretched it out at the May 30th Move it Show. The Joe Ink workshop was stimulating and interactive for kids and allowed their parents to bring out their inner child as they joined in the live dance performance. Energetic lead dancers Jacci and Barb encouraged everyone to be a "super dancer" as they coached participants to follow the magic hand, do the robot or paint the bubble. |

Free performing arts workshops for familiesStarting January 31st, ArtStarts is presenting a free performance series for families in Vancouver's downtown area. "ArtStarts on Saturdays" will kick off with a workshop by circus artist Sand Northrup AKA One Woman Circus, who will introduce youngsters to circus skills including feather balancing, juggling, rola bola and plate-spinning. |
Iskwew tours schools in the StikineIskwew, a trio of First Nations women, who perform in the plains and West Coast traditions toured the Stikine and the Kootenays with ArtStarts in November and got an early welcome to winter. |
