Hoop Dancing with Teddy Anderson

Posted by ArtStarts on Saturday September 25th, 2010

In honour of Culture Days and the opening of our new exhibition, ArtStarts showcased two interactive workshops by traditional First Nations Hoop Dancer Teddy Anderson as part of our ArtStarts on Saturdays series. Teddy's moves, which sometimes had him spinning up to 20 hoops at one time, captivated the audience.

After watching Teddy perform a few dances, the audience was invited to learn some of the basic movements of hoop dancing. Children and parents alike enjoyed learning how to lock three hoops together behind their back to create flappable wings.

Teddy Anderson, who was adopted into the Tlingit Tribe as a Crow Indian, began his Hoop Dancing training at the age of 15 under the guidance of native Saulteaux Scott Ward. We would like to thank Teddy for leading such an energetic and interactive workshop!

ArtStarts on Saturdays takes place on the last Saturday of every month. Be sure to check out our next workshop on October 30th, which will feature Will Stroet with his Backyard Band! ArtStarts would like to thank TELUS Vancouver Community Board for their generous support of the ArtStarts on Saturday series.
