We are excited to announce that artist Marisa Pahl and The Writers' Exchange have come on board as YoungStarters mentors!
Marisa Pahl is a visual artist working at the intersection of art, education and social practice. Watercolour painting is her primary medium but she also designs 3D installations from found and recycled objects, as a way to engage in environmental dialogues.
The Writers' Exchange is an organization that gets inner-city kids excited about reading and writing. They provide writing workshops, family literacy programs and more.
They will be joining ArtStarts Program Coordinator Elfred Matining and Violet-Rose Pharoah, creator of The File Folder Project, who will also be mentors this summer.
YoungStarters is a free arts mentorship program that invites young people to take the lead in arts based community projects.
This year, young people between the ages of 13-18 who are currently in or have been in the foster care system are invited to participate in the YoungStarters program.
YoungStarters will build valuable skills through the guidance of mentors, gain relevant experiences through collaborative workshops, and establish a network of peers and members of the art community, while also introducing new narratives into the fold. Working on projects from ideation to planning to execution through an arts based approach while utilizing different mediums, the aim is to experience the creative process as each project evolves. This is also an opportunity for our community to gain clearer perspectives of the reality of the foster care system.
The deadline to apply is July 10, 2015.
