What’s The BIG IDEA?
A guided tour of the BIG IDEAS exhibition at the ArtStarts gallery

BIG IDEAS exhibition at ArtStarts

  • SEE an exhibition of artwork created by Vancouver students in grades 6, 10, 11 & 12 in response to the Vancouver Biennale’s public art sculptures
  • LEARN more about the BIG IDEAS (or underlying themes) behind the public sculptures
  • CREATE deeper connections through an art activity related to one of the BIG IDEAS

Choose one of the following BIG IDEAS to explore through discussion and an art activity (suitable for all grades):

We, 2008BIG IDEA: Immigration and Settlement
Referencing the sculpture We, 2008 by Jaume Plensa and the student artwork on display, we will explore the challenges related to the theme immigration and settlement, find an access point to relate to and empathize with the immigrant experience as it affects people in our school and community. This will be followed by a drawing activity.

- OR-

BIG IDEA: Freedom of Expression and Censorship
Referencing the sculpture A-mazing-Laughter by Yue Minjun and the student artwork on display, we will discuss the themes of freedom of expression and censorship, examining what the terms mean, looking at examples of it in the world around us and in our daily life. This will be followed by a drawing activity.
