Arts Integration Learning Lab for Vancouver Island and Coast Artists: Apply by September 30

Are you a professional artist interested in working with young people and educators in schools? Or do you already have some experience and want to enhance your skills?

The Arts Integration Learning Lab is a professional development experience for artists of all disciplines, designed to build their capacity and position them to work alongside educators in schools.

This event offers a series of five practical, experiential learning workshops taking place in Nanaimo, from November 14 to 18, 2016. Professional artists living throughout BC's Vancouver Island and Coast region are invited to apply by September 30, 2016.

A Subsidized Learning Series

The cost for artists selected to participate in the Arts Integration Learning Lab will be subsidized and covers tuition, program materials and lunch. A subsidy for accommodation is also available. This opportunity is made possible through funding support from BC Arts Council and the Government of British Columbia’s Creative Futures program.

Artists selected to participate in the Arts Integration Learning Lab will:

• Develop a deeper understanding of arts integration and identify opportunities to grow their own professional practice
• Develop abilities to plan and lead quality arts integrated learning experiences through their art form
• Learn about resources and opportunities for artists available through ArtStarts
• Explore the culture of schools and connect with the BC Ministry of Education’s new curriculum
• Discover opportunities for artists to connect with educators in a professional capacity
• Connect with local artists and engage in peer learning

Workshops

• Creativity 101 — How do we talk about creativity within an institutional, educational context? Through left- and right-brain workshop activities, participate in a series of collaborative, hands-on experiences that will unpack contemporary perceptions of art and education, philosophies and domains of the creative process, and an introduction to arts integration as an approach to teaching.
• Pedagogy: Art Practice as Teaching Practice — Learning is the acquisition of knowledge; investigating the multiple ways that transfer can occur is the subject of pedagogy. An art practice is potent with the capability to create dialogue — and through this dialogue learning happens. Working with a professional teaching artist, explore how the creative process, through an arts integration approach, can be utilized to engage and activate the imaginations of young people in classrooms.
• School Culture — Every school has a unique combination of cultural values, norms and guiding principles that form their collective “school culture”. Through an interactive panel discussion and hands-on presentation with experienced educators and professional teaching artists, gain perspectives about the contemporary nuances of schools in British Columbia. They will walk through a recent Artists in the Classroom project and discuss the process of ideation, planning and execution from the perspective of school culture.
• Navigating Resources — Having a sound knowledge of resources is key to creating inclusive, informative and engaging arts-based learning experiences for young people. Discover where to access relevant resources and learn how to utilize them effectively. Through a series of collaborative workshop activities, learn how to navigate the BC Ministry of Education Curriculum with confidence, present your professional art practice to educators and write articulate, compelling grant proposals.
• Ecosystem of Teaching Methods — Teachers are creative, innovative and pragmatic people. A teacher constantly references, adapts and combines a multiplicity of teaching methods to make up their individual teaching practice. Discover a variety of teaching methods while collaborating in small groups to design an arts integrated learning experience for young people.

• Applications are due by September 30, 2016.
• The event will take place Monday, November 14 through Friday, November 18, 2016, 10am to 4pm, at the Nanaimo Art Gallery, 150 Commercial St, Nanaimo, BC.

Who can attend?

Professional artists living throughout BC's Vancouver Island and Coast region are invited to apply. This region includes all of Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands, and the Sunshine Coast to the Central Coast (from Gibsons north to Bella Coola).

Who receives a subsidy? What does it cover?

The cost for all artists selected to participate in the Arts Integration Learning Lab will be subsidized and covers tuition, program materials and lunch.

Who can apply for an accommodation subsidy?

Professional artists living in the following areas are eligible to apply for an accommodation subsidy:

• North of Courtenay-Comox

• West of Port Alberni

• South of Duncan

• Sunshine Coast to Central Coast

• Gulf Islands and other islands (e.g. Salt Spring, Galiano, Gabriola, Hornby, Texada, Quadra, etc.)
