ArtStarts At Rivermarket: Ginalina Family Folk & Ukulele Music

By Leah Horlick, Program Manager

Ever wanted to learn how to play the ukulele, if only you had more time? Ginalina to the rescue! With her simple, kid-friendly methods of finding the bellybutton on the ukulele, and practicing star-shapes with our fingers, Ginalina led two groups of beginner ukulele players through classic kids’ songs and her own original work in less than an hour!

A two-time Juno nominated family folk musician, Ginalina had the crowd singing in about cars and bikes in English, spring blossoms in Mandarin, and dancing along in French as part of songs from her four albums that celebrate the wonders of childhood, nature, family, and community. It was clear to us why this engaging performer and longtime member of the ArtStarts family is featured on Kids Knowledge Network (“Ginalina’s Music Club”) and has also recently landed a spot on Universal Kids! Ginalina’s engaging performance drew visitors out to RiverMarket from across the Lower Mainland -- as well as passers-by who were enjoying the sunshine along the river.

As always, we’re grateful to our friends at RiverMarket, especially Leslie Shieh, for letting us take the ArtStarts show on the road. Our expert cohort of Sunday volunteers, Raymond and Alia, are a huge part of making sure each performance goes smoothly--from making sure we have enough chairs for multigenerational families to enjoy the music, to helping us share space with our neighbours at the Vancouver Circus School and the board game club.

Haven’t been to RiverMarket yet? Hop on the Skytrain and come visit us for an off-site ArtStarts experience that takes you out of the Gallery and right beside the Fraser River! Our programs at ArtStarts at RiverMarket take place on the unceded, traditional territory of the Kwantlen and Qayqayt peoples. As we celebrate childhood, families, and communities through music and the arts, we can’t forget that the land belongs to communities who have stewarded it in their own families since time immemorial. Curious about whose land your home is located on? Take a look at this interactive map to learn more.
