Creativity 101 at Queen Elizabeth Elementary

Have you ever heard a student (or teacher) say, "I'm not creative, I can't draw"?

On September 1, Infusion Program Manager, Elfred Matining and Development Manager, Sarah Kim led 17 educators from Queen Elizabeth Elementary in New Westminster through ArtStarts' newest professional development offering, Creativity 101.

Creativity 101 allows teachers to investigate, deconstruct and formulate ideas around creativity, creative and artistic processes, and the value of the arts in education.

Using active concrete examples and dynamic hands-on approaches, participants embodied their learning which they could then apply in their classrooms. Through collaboration and lively discussion, they learned to think outside the box, despite their previous relationship to art and creativity.

By the end of the workshop, participants learned that through awareness, exploration and nurturing, creativity could be fostered by anyone. As some of the participating teachers said, the workshop was "an out-of-the box experience" that yielded "lots of confidence-building ideas".
