Science to Art: Pollinators

Science to Art (START) is a travelling museum project that allows Elementary and Secondary school students to design and create exhibitions through intergenerational collaboration with volunteer art mentors. This year the exhibits highlight a very important local environmental issue: the plight of pollinators.

Five schools from Vancouver and North Vancouver involved with the Edible Garden Project and the Intergenerational Landed Learning Project have contributed to START. Waverley Elementary, Edith Cavell Elementary, Holy Trinity Elementary, Sutherland Secondary and Highlands Elementary tackled the task of creating museum exhibitions in their own creative way, ranging from a large mason bee house sculpture with informative scrolls to shadow boxes with mixed media to video montages.

Overall, 300 students, 20 art mentors and 11 teachers came together to research different pollinator groups, their life history characteristics, environmental risks and ways we can help pollinators.

START was led by Thanushi Eagalle (UBC Master of Museum Education student and Education Coordinator of the Edible Garden Project), and was funded by the UBC Chapman and Innovation grant.

On June 22, art mentors and educators gathered with students and their families to celebrate this wonderful exhibition.
