About ArtStarts

Since 1996, ArtStarts has invested in expanding the role of art in education so that young people develop the skills they need to thrive in learning and in life. When kids learn in and through the arts, they develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills while also building empathy and the ability to collaborate. We believe that everyone is creative and we are committed to supporting all children to realize their full creative potential.

Why does art in education matter?

  • Art is essential for activating creativity for young people: Young people become motivated through the process of creating, they establish new ways to communicate and feel empowered to try new things without the fear of failure.
  • Arts-based education reaches all learners: A one-size-fits-all approach does not work for today’s learners, and when students engage in a creative process that connects an art form to another subject area, learning comes alive.
  • Art is essential to the human experience:  Art enables us to experience joy, beauty, and wonder. It teaches us to summon the imagination and it nurtures the development of our creativity.
  • Art builds 21st-century skills: In a rapidly changing world, and with the line between human and machine blurring, the skills that young people will find most relevant include creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and empathy.

Why your contribution matters?

Your gift will enable us to bring arts-based learning into more classrooms across BC. With your support, we will help provide every child the opportunity to activate their creative abilities so that they will thrive in learning and graduate with the skills and competencies they need to succeed in the rapidly changing (and messy) world, and to participate in society, whatever path they choose.

  • "The students learned much about their ability to express themselves through music. They learned how to persevere when things become challenging, about how practicing a skill can increase their skill level, and that doing something creative and joyful can give you energy to tackle difficult tasks (i.e. courses that may be difficult or not their favourite)" BC Teacher
