Reviews

I am a teacher at Mary Butterworth Junior High School in North Edmonton and I have had the pleasure of working with Les Bûcherons for over 10 years now. My students call me a Bûcheron groupie! This word of thanks and recognition however is long overdue. I am happy to say that Les Bûcherons have been yearly visitors to our school. My students in FSL 7, 8 and 9 have been involved in everything from workshops and presentations to the artist in residency program and year end trips to Cabine Soleil. Whatever we do or wherever we are, we are always greeted with warm smiles and made to feel like part of their extended family. Being Junior High, it is often difficult for some students to get past the 'I am too cool for French attitude', but from the moment, Les Bûcherons walk through the door their enthusiasm and willingness to put themselves out there is so infectious that it soon has my students stepping outside their comfort zone and getting fully involved. What an amazing sight to see. Les Bûcherons definitely hold a place of honour at Mary Butterworth School. We look forward to many more fun-filled experiences with them. Their program promotes the French Canadian culture through dance, songs, stories and the playing of spoons. In a half day, they rotated nine classes of Grade 4 and 5 students through one of four workshops. In these workshops, the students learned how to square dance, line dance, play the spoons and sing the songs. The performers then presented a one-hour concert in which all the students presented what they had learned. As a teacher, I really appreciated the online resource, Avant Que J'oublie which comes with over 70 videos of songs, dances, wooden spoon percussion and a guideline for celebrating in schools.
