$44,740 has just been awarded to 28 artist residency projects through our Artists in Education 2 Grant. That means that over 3440 students in 19 BC communities will have their learning enriched this school year, as professional artists engage with them through hands-on art projects in the classroom.

For over 30 years, AIE has introduced hundreds of thousands of children and youth to traditional and cultural events in a multidisciplinary range of dance, theatre, music, literary, media and visual arts. This year is no exception.
Project highlights from the June 2010 application intake include Aboriginal Stories – A Digital Twist in Coyote’s Tale which will find students at Lucerne Elementary School in New Denver exploring the living history of the Sinixt Nation with digital storyteller Catrina Longmuir. At Vancouver’s Windemere Secondary School, students will embark upon the Community Map phase of their Art in the Courtyard series with artists Carmen Rosen and Flick Harrison and at Braefoot Elementary School in Victoria, students will explore the art of creative writing with acclaimed author Robin Stevenson.

This round of funding represents only about half of what will be awarded in the 2010-11 school year through the AIE2 grant as the Selection Advisory Committee, gears up once more to pour over the most recent round of AIE2 applications. The committee, which is comprised of artists and educators, has the challenging task of awarding the remaining funds to schools that applied in the October application intake.
ArtStarts looks forward to announcing the next group of successful applicants in the coming month!
