"From Humming to Mouth Drumming" is an interactive performance/workshop of vocal experimentation that will have students singing and laughing along! The topics covered will include vocal exercises, instrument imitation, and beatboxing. Students will be encouraged to express their individuality by using their voices to create a wide array of silly and fun sounds. The performance will include demonstration, improvisation, call and response, and interactivity. Participants will experiment making sounds with their mouth on their own, and may even be called up on stage to share with the group within their own comfort level. We will learn many individual sounds, and ultimately combine what we have learned to beatbox along with an actual song. Participants should expect to be laughing a lot as they make sounds they’ve never made before!

This exciting and interactive workshop kicks off with a short beatboxing performance, before your students begin learning to make a variety of beatbox noises of their own! The students will learn about real percussion instruments, and use their critical ear to break down how beats are constructed in different styles of music. The workshop culminates in the students working together to apply the beatboxing basics they learned to a song of their choosing, and performing for the class in small groups. Expect a lot of interaction and a lot of laughs as your students work together to create beats for their favourite songs using only their mouths.

Testimonials & Reviews

A few weeks ago, I couldn't get anyone to even TRY beatboxing, and now (thanks to you) they all want to do it! Laura Fitzpatrick - Teacher, The Bishop Strachan School
He brought to our organization a professionalism and artistic excellence that is conveyed every time we present his offering to a class. He is a dynamic and engaging performer and always inspires students both in the class and long after he has completed his workshop. Teachers have told us that students have carried on David’s teachings into their own performances and also resulted in student beat boxing clubs within the school. Maria Williams - Executive Director, Prologue Performing Arts
I have seen for myself the effervescent presence and beautiful vocal skills that David brings to his dealings with children. As a member of the Juno-nominated group Cadence, which time and time again delighted my students with their performances, David exhibited showmanship, expertise in singing and beatboxing, and the wacky sense of humour that all members of Cadence possessed. Maribeth Graham - Teacher, Peel District School Board
