May’s installment of our free workshop series was a big hit, with record numbers of kids (and kids at heart) taking part in an African drumming workshop led by master drummer, Fana Soro. Some of the kids made it down after having seen Fana perform at their school in the past.
Luckily Fana brought his huge collection of hand drums and other instruments along to the workshop, so everyone got a turn to learn and practice some basic drumming techniques, and some dance moves too. Fana encouraged everyone to smile while drumming. He explained that smiling actually affects the sound coming from the drum and the performance in general.
All that smiling probably had something to do with the amount of fun everyone seemed to have, including Fana whose smile may have been the biggest of all.
ArtStarts on Saturdays takes place on the last Saturday of every month. Check out past workshops here and be sure to join us on June 25th when the Dancers of Damelahamid share traditional Gitksan and Cree dances with us.
ArtStarts thanks Boeing for their generous support of the ArtStarts on Saturday series.
