Artists in the Classroom Grant Recipient List

ArtStarts in Schools will be distributing $229,042 to schools across the province to bring artists into their classrooms. The Artists in the Classroom grants are funding 68 projects including 12 large scale projects of up to $10,000. This is the first of two intakes for the 2017-18 school year.

Through these projects,

  • 6,965 students will get the chance to engage in hands-on arts experiences with professional artists to facilitate deeper learning
  • 94 professional artists will further develop their artistic excellence and practice
  • 336 educators will integrate arts into their classrooms to inspire creativity and innovation

The projects span British Columbia from Sparwood to Prince George to Port McNeill for students from kindergarten to grade 12. Artistic disciplines range from poetry to pottery to pantomime. The 68 projects competed in a merit-based assessment of artistic quality, student engagement, curricular connections and project scope. Each project is unique; you can see a full listing of these projects below.

Here is just a taste of some of the projects that will unfold this school year:

Listen to Your Gut
Grindrod Elementary
Grindrod, BC

Students will create a large scale model of the gastrointestinal tract that people can move through. Each class will use a variety of artistic media (fabric, puppetry, movement, etc) to represent a section of the digestive passage to creatively learn about how the food we eat is processed in our own bodies and becomes the building blocks for growth and health.

Natural Selection Through the Lens of Aboriginal Mythology: Scientific Theory Represented through Traditional Storytelling, Creative Writing and Graphic Art
Brocklehurst Middle School
Kamloops, BC

After hearing legends from a traditional Aboriginal storyteller and researching organisms native to their area, students will create a digital storybook with illustrations that explains how their chosen organism adapts for survival in the style of Aboriginal mythology.

Material World
Burnaby North Secondary
Burnaby, BC

Through an exploration of waste and our material world, students will explore the possibilities of a chosen disposable material, how to cut it, shape it, join it, to create a sculpture or useful object from it in response to their research.

On a Beam of Light
Journey Middle School
Sooke, BC

Students will study examples of how innovation has changed the world and continues to deliver the future. The struggles of great thinkers like Albert Einstein will be studied to learn about human nature – what common qualities do innovators have? Students will use what they’ve learned about the challenges of being a creative thinker to develop characters, memorize lines, learn choreography and present a play.

Artists in the Classroom grants offer up to $3,500 for small scale projects and grants of up to $10,000 for large scale projects. Artists, teachers, principals and PAC representatives in British Columbia are eligible to apply. The next deadline to apply is October 16, 2017, for projects taking place January to June 2018.

AIC grants are disbursed by ArtStarts in Schools and funded by BC Arts Council and the Government of British Columbia's Creative Futures program.
